In August of 2008, I attempted to summit Mt. Rainier in an effort to raise
awareness and support for PathWaysPA.  While I didn't make the summit, it
was an incredible journey which proved even more rewarding than I had
hoped for both Pathways and me personally.  Please check out my
blog and the
picture links on this site for story of my "adventure."

Pathways is a truly outstanding social services agency focused on keeping
families together and moving them toward self sufficiency.  If you have not
yet had the chance to do so, please

you can directly support this effort.

Thank you in advance for your support.  It
will be put to great use.

Why am I doing this?
The convergence of my deteriorating knees and shoulder (which ended jogging and
tennis - such as it was) and the purchase of my first digital camera led to the rekindling of
an old interest in hiking and nature.  Two camera upgrades, a constantly frustrating
relationship with Photoshop, many short photo excursions (including Mt. Rainier Park) and
one serious hike up Pikes Peak have brought me to the point of deciding that this is good
idea.  (Several trips to my wine cellar probably helped the decision process as well.)

At the same time my personal interests have been evolving, I have been increasingly
inspired by the incredible
efforts of the Pathways staff and their clients who work so hard
against incredible odds to achieve
real success.  Pathways’ work touches the community
in a myriad of ways from helping a truant student get back on track, to helping a desperate
mother keep her children and break the foster care cycle, to helping welfare recipients
master real skills and obtain a meaningful job that can lead to true self sufficiency.

Finally, in addition to raising needed direct support for Pathways, I hope that this effort can
serve as a
template for others who wish to find ways to leverage personal interests or
hobbies in support of worthy causes.

Mt. Rainier.
What struck me about the Mountain is its combination of sheer dominance over the
surrounding landscape and the incredibly beautiful contrasts of its forests, wildflowers,
glaciers, and barren rock fields.  At 14,411 feet (4,392 m), Mt. Rainier is the highest peak
in the Cascade Range and the most glaciated mountain in the lower 48 states.  At its
summit are two volcanic craters (hopefully inactive) which generate enough heat to melt
the ice at their edges.  Mt. Rainier’s “topographical prominence” of over 13,000’ is greater
than that of K2 in the Himalayas (the second highest peak on earth).

A couple of August days around the base of Rainier is all it takes to “catch the bug.”  I
have tried to capture some of this in the pictures you can find elsewhere on this site.
